Should you include mindfulness into your fitness routine?
June, 2023
A major benefit of exercising regularly is improving your mental health.
Being active, such as going for a run, spending time in the gym, or even enjoying nature with a brisk walk, is massively positive both physically and mentally.
But what about mindfulness? Is this something that you should practise?
I’m going to explain what mindfulness is and whether you should include it into your fitness routine.
What is mindfulness?
Mindfulness is the act of being fully aware of what is around you. Instead of dwelling on certain things from the past or worrying about the future, you are fully focused on the here and now.
It sounds a bit like meditation. In fact, meditation is one thing you can do to practise mindfulness, but it isn’t the only act and other practices such as yoga will help too.
Being aware of what is around us such as sights, sounds, and smells, helps to manage the thoughts that we have and boost our mental health.
What are the benefits of mindfulness?
Mindfulness has benefits for exercising and while it can be tempting to put in earphones and workout, being more aware of what you are doing can have a positive impact.
Some of the main benefits of practising mindfulness when working out include:
- You’ll be more aware of your performance when exercising
- Post-session you’ll feel a greater sense of satisfaction
- It can help you to stay motivated during your workout
Mindfulness in general will help with your overall mental health; however, incorporating it into your fitness routine can provide excellent physical benefits and a greater sense of wellbeing.
How to include mindfulness into your fitness routine
Given the positive effects that mindfulness brings, especially when working out, how do you go about implementing this into your fitness routine?
The first thing to do is to train with a goal in mind. This will help you to keep your focus and sets a purpose for your workout. Not only is this better to help you achieve your overall milestones, but it helps with your concentration and paying attention to what you are doing during exercise.
Another method to include mindfulness into your workout is to focus on what your body is doing. Instead of trying to ignore movements or feelings by listening to music, concentrate on the actions you are doing or, if you are going for a run, the sound and feel of your feet on the pavement. This helps your mind to focus on the here and now instead of drifting off into different thoughts.
Also, take a few moments for yourself during a workout. If you’re lifting weights or using a machine in the gym, pause every so often and take in your surroundings. It will calm you down, give your body a few minutes to relax, and it will focus your attention on the next stage of your workout.
Mindfulness can have excellent benefits to your minds and bodies. Practising mindfulness and making it a staple part of your fitness routine will help with overall effectiveness and bring a greater sense of purpose and wellbeing.
