Some basic tips if you are thinking of joining a gym
January, 2023
As we move into a new year, many people make getting fitter and healthier their resolution for the next 12 months. Hence why gym membership numbers start to skyrocket.
However, sticking with the gym throughout the year isn’t easy, as most people start to fall off around the end of February or March. So, if you are considering joining a gym in the new year (or any other time), I have some basic tips to help you get the most out of your membership.
Tips for joining a gym
#1 Make use of an induction session
Most gyms will offer some kind of induction session for new members. In fact, in many gyms, this is mandatory before you are let loose on the equipment by yourself.
Rather than view this as an unnecessary hoop to jump through before you get started, use it to your advantage. The induction session can help you familiarize yourself with various equipment, get to know the various etiquette associated with the gym, and make the whole process feel less daunting.
#2 Look at joining exercise classes
Exercising on your own isn’t for everyone, and it can be difficult for some people to motivate themselves to go to the gym by themselves. Group exercises have several benefits and if you find that you are struggling to work out solo, look at the different classes the gym offers.
Classes will keep you motivated, and build your confidence when trying out various exercises, and it can be a good way to meet other gym members too.
#3 Choose a less busy time to go
Gyms can feel like daunting places, especially if you are new.
While exercising with a busy lifestyle can be difficult, and when and where you work out can be dictated by other things, try and head to the gym at quieter times.
Each gym will have its own peak times; however, as a general rule, mid-afternoon and later in the evening tend to be when most gyms aren’t as busy. By going during an off-peak time, you won’t have to wait as long for equipment to free up, and you can use this to boost your confidence without a lot of people around.
#4 Set yourself realistic goals
It can be easy to set yourself unrealistic goals (especially as a new year resolution), and when you don’t achieve these targets, motivation and enthusiasm start to wane.
When joining a gym, make sure the goals you set are achievable. Setting yourself goals is important as it helps you to track progress and get that feeling of accomplishment, but whether it is losing weight, training for a challenge, or generally just getting fitter, make sure your targets are sensible.
#5 Create a balanced workout plan
Finally, to get the most out of your gym experience, create a balanced workout plan that doesn’t overdo it in one area.
It can be easy to get bored if you do the same exercises every time you go to the gym, so focus on different body parts on different days. For example, one day, mainly do cardio; the next day concentrate on your upper body, and then the next on your lower body.
This stops your workouts from becoming boring, gives you a structure to keep to, and also creates a balanced workout plan that you will benefit from.
