Eating the right foods and supplements plays a significant role in ensuring that your exercise regime is as effective as possible.
There is a clear link between healthy nutrition and achieving your fitness goals.
I often get asked if probiotics can help with working out. So, in this update, I am going to dive into probiotics and how they can help working alongside exercise to help you lose weight, get back in shape, or take your fitness to the next level.
What are probiotics?
First things first, what actually are probiotics? We always hear about probiotic foods and supplements, but many people aren’t sure what they actually consist of.
Probiotics are healthy bacteria that either consist of live bacteria or yeast. Some good examples of probiotics include various foods such as:
- Yogurts
- Sourdough bread
- Cottage cheese
- Kombucha
- Kimchi
- Pickles
- Miso
- Sauerkraut
You can also get your intake of probiotics through various supplements.
How do probiotics help with working working out?
Probiotics are popular to deal with various health problems; however, they can also work well to aide your exercise regime.
Maximising your recovery
Eating the right food post-workout is vital to ensure your muscles and body recover properly and you achieve maximum gains.
Probiotics help increase antioxidant absorption which has a direct impact on allowing your body to recover properly after you have finished your workout. This can help to fight free radicals and also reduce muscle and tissue damage.
Motivation and mental energy
Frequentexercise can have a positive impact on your mental health, although getting yourself int the right frame of mind to not only start your workout, but push yourself as much as you can, isn’t easy.
One benefit of probiotics is that it a healthy gut can lead to increased serotonin levels. This has a direct effect on your motivation and leads to a more positive mindset. By intaking probiotics regularly, you can increase your motivation and mental energy to workout more often and for longer.
Boosting your immunity
Lastly, probiotics help with your immune system.
Exercise is a excellent way to enhance your immune system, but probiotics also help as they create healthy bacteria in your body. If you often get sick or feel under the weather, you won’t workout as regularly as you should. By keeping healthy and ensuring your immune system is as strong as it can be, the chances of getting ill are reduced.
When should you consume probiotics?
There is a lot of discussion around whether you should take probiotics before or after a workout, or if it even matters at all.
It is best to consume probiotics at the same time each day as this not only gets you into a routine, but allows your body to get used to this healthy bacteria.
So, it shouldn’t really matter too much if you intake probiotics before or after your workout, but try and get into a routine of taking them at the same time each day.
