Tips for staying motivated when working out at home

It is hard to believe that it has been a year since the initial lockdown in the UK.

In that time, many people have been substituting going to the gym or exercising a lot outdoors with working out at home.

You might remember my blog post from away back in 2020 – How to exercise when you have to stay at home. Since gyms are still closed and most people are still working at home or at least spending the majority of their time at home, it is worth looking at how to stay motivated.

12 months is a long time and over the course of a year, our motivation can wane.

So, here are some tips to keep up your motivation.

Set yourself goals

Training with a goal in mind is important whether it is during normal times when you are hitting the gym several times a week or loading up an exercise video in your living room.

If you set clear goals of what you want to achieve, it’ll be a lot easier to get stuck into a workout.

As you start to see progress – whether this is weight loss or simply feeling fitter and more energetic – the motivation to keep going should become easier.

Try and make a dedicated workout space

This isn’t always easy.

Depending on how big your home is, finding dedicated space to workout in can be a bit of a challenge. That being said, it doesn’t need to be anything fancy. You don’t need your own home gym and it can be something as simple as moving some furniture in your living room and throwing down an exercise mat.

The key is that if you make space to workout in, you’ll be less likely to get distracted.

Dress to exercise

It might sound simple but if you are working out at home, dress as you would if you were going to the gym.

Getting into the right headspace for exercise is vital.

Taking on a HIIT workout or some basic fitness programs in your pyjamas or everyday clothes probably won’t get you in the right frame of mind to push yourself. What you wear when exercising can have a direct psychological impact on motivation.

Staying motivated when working out at home

While things are looking better in regards to the pandemic, exercising at home for the majority of the time might be around for a while longer.

Especially on the days when the weather curbs any intention you had of going for a walk or a run.

If you don’t fancy exercising outdoors and the gyms are still a while off from opening again, keeping fit where and when you can, is important.

These tips should help you to motivate yourself to workout at home.

You don’t need any fancy equipment, a lot of space or anything other than your normal exercise clothes, a workout regime and some motivation to get started.
