Preparing for the Great Midlands Fun Run

It certainly comes around quickly and if you’ve signed up for the Sutton Coldfield Great Midlands Fun Run this year, it’s probably all starting to feel very real about now!

Whether you’re a seasoned athlete, or a complete beginner, your training for the 8.5-mile run is hopefully well underway.

However, if time has crept up on you and you’ve yet to do much preparation – don’t worry, as you’ve come to the right place.

Our personal training in Sutton Coldfield can help you get motivated and get on track for the big event on June 4.

Tailor-made running plans

With little over six weeks to go, your training plan will depend very much on your current levels of fitness. It’s then about using the remaining time to maximum effect to build endurance and get your body used to higher levels of physical activity.

As a personal trainer in Sutton Coldfield, we have been helping people of all ages and abilities prepare for the Great Midlands Fun Run during the 15 years it has been going. As such, we can work with you to develop a tailor-made programme to make the most of the next few weeks and maximise your performance on the big day.

Helping people take on challenges is a key part of our personal training in Sutton Coldfield.

Here are some of the key points you’ll want to consider as you prepare for the Great Midlands Fun Run.

Running technique

Runners and joggers, especially beginners, often put stress and strain on certain muscles and joints due to poor running technique. We can work with you to help you improve your running technique and performance. This includes the correct breathing patterns to help you keep going for longer.

Getting outdoors

If you’ve been clocking up the miles on a treadmill, I’d advise taking that training outside as soon as possible. Outdoor running is quite different to using a treadmill and it’s definitely worth building up your experience and stamina on different terrain.

Because we offer personal training in Sutton Coldfield, Sutton Park is one of our favourite stomping grounds. This means we are more than familiar with the Great Midlands Fun Run route and can help you familiarise yourself with the course – and that dreaded ‘cardiac hill’!

 Strength and core training

Preparing for a big event is not just about pounding the pavements though. You should include some strength training into your plan to help boost your fitness levels and endurance. High-rep, low-weight exercises are particularly good, as this will raise your stamina without increasing your muscle mass too much.

Exercises to strengthen your legs will also help improve your running and reduce the risk of injury, while work to strengthen your core and increase flexibility will help with your posture and running technique.

Interval training

Interval training, based on short bursts of exercises, followed by a short period of rest, is also great for improving your fitness overall.

Hill training, for example, is particularly good preparation for a run. It involves running up a hill at a fast, yet sustainable, pace, for around 60 seconds. Then walk or jog back down slowly, rest for 30 seconds and repeat. And if you can conquer cardiac hill by sprinting up it, then it will look a lot less daunting on run day!

Stretching and resting

Adding warm up and cool down stretches into your training sessions is vital for preventing injuries, so make sure you don’t overlook this vital part of your training. You also need to allow time for rest and recovery to avoid over exhaustion.

Nutrition is a vital part of any training programme, so make sure you eat a healthy, balanced diet with lots of protein and carbohydrates.
