How to keep yourself motivated to achieve your goals

April, 2023

I find that many people struggle with motivation.

Setting your fitness goals is important as I think that having a clear objective to work towards helps you to achieve tangible results. However, I come across clients who really find it difficult to find the motivation to exercise regularly.

This is especially true when the results aren’t achieved as quickly as you would like.

So, here are a few methods that will help keep you motivated.

Fit exercise into your regular schedule

This is vital.

If you are simply working out or going for a run now and again, it will take a lot longer for you to see the benefits, and you might not even achieve your goal at all.

This leads to people simply giving up after a period of time.

Even though we mostly have busy lifestyles, it should still be possible to fit exercise into your regular schedule. By having set times and days dedicated to fitness, you will find it much easier to find the motivation to keep going.

Variety is key to motivation

Another mistake I find that many people make is doing the same exercises over and over again.

You might enjoy this for a short period of time, but it will get boring fast.

The answer to this problem is to keep a varied exercise regime where you do different things on different days. Focus on gym work one day, running another day, and mix it up with going for a swim or cycling as well. Really it is up to you and what goal you want to achieve, but keeping your fitness schedule as varied as possible will help you to maintain interest for longer.

Think about micro-goals

I’m a big fan of setting mico-goals because they will all lead you to achieve your main goal.

Also, completing these micro-goals on your journey will give you a real sense of accomplishment which will help to keep your motivation intact.

For example, let’s look at weight loss. If you want to lose 12 pounds over a period of time, don’t just focus on this end result. Break it down into a month-by-month weight loss target.

Aim to lose 4 pounds in the first month. If you achieve this, you have already got a third of the way to your target. Then set yourself another goal for the next month.

This is a much better and more positive method, and achieving these micro-goals will keep you motivated for a longer time period.

Get help from a PT

Lastly, one of the big reasons people give up and lose interest in fitness is that they are simply working out and trying to achieve what they want by themselves.

By using a quality personal trainer, you get the help of someone dedicated to helping you achieve your goals. This isn’t done by screaming orders at you (I’m definitely not a sergeant major type PT!), but I do know how to keep your motivation going through encouragement.

A lack of motivation is usually the main factor in people giving up on their goals, so ensure it doesn’t happen to you and get in touch to find out how I can help.
