I Want A Personal Trainer

How to Choose the Right Personal Trainer for Your Fitness Goals

October, 2023

Starting to think about your fitness level and using the services of a personal trainer is a big step.

It’s great that you are taking action to improve your physical and mental health, and this is why choosing the right personal trainer for you is so important.

Not everyone ‘clicks’ with their PT. Some might have different outlooks, and they might just not be compatible with each other. In this blog, I’m going to outline the things that you should think about when choosing a personal trainer to work with.

How to Choose the Right Personal Trainer for Your Fitness Goals

What kind of motivation do you need?

Everyone is different.

Some people like a sergeant major type personal trainer who will shout them into finding the motivation to push themselves. Other people want more gentle encouragement.

I’m definitely not a shouter, but I will motivate and encourage you during our sessions so you get maximum benefits from your workout.

Where do they train?

This is another important thing to consider.

If you like to train in the gym, then you probably want a PT to generally work with their clients in that environment. Alternatively, many people (including myself) like being out in the fresh air, although I still do gym work with clients.

There are arguments for the benefits of working out indoors or exercising indoors, but really, it comes down to what you prefer and then finding a PT who is on the same wavelength.

Also, find out their availability. If you have a particularly busy lifestyle and you are only able to exercise within a tight schedule, your PT has to be available at the same time.

How much do they charge?

Cost is another big factor.

Some personal trainers will cost more than others, so do your research first and find out what you can afford. Many PTs will offer discounts on the amount of sessions you pay for, and it depends on what your goals are and how long you want to stay with the trainer.

Do they offer other health services?

Even though a personal trainer is there to help you reach your fitness goals (lose weight or train for a challenge), some PTs can also offer other services, such as nutritional advice.

I am qualified to do this, and while I can’t offer specific meal plans (especially for medical conditions), I can get you started with a healthier eating pattern and advice to get the maximum results from your workout.

For me, this is as important as the exercise you do.

Choosing your personal trainer

Choosing the right personal trainer to suit your needs, personality, and goals is vital. If you don’t, you may end up training with someone who is compatible with what you want.
