5 ways to exercise without joining a gym
May, 2023
Joining a gym and going several times a week isn’t everyone’s cup of tea.
Whether it is time constraints due to a busy lifestyle, the cost involved, or you have simply decided that the gym isn’t for you, that doesn’t mean you can’t get in shape.
There are many ways that you can keep fit without paying for a gym membership.
So, let’s look at ways you can still exercise without paying for an expensive gym membership.
5 ways to exercise without joining a gym
Home workouts
During the pandemic, many of us invested in some equipment to work out at home.
If you’re finding it hard to find the time to hit the gym, purchasing some dumbbells, weights, or a jump rope, can be an ideal method of working out without going to the gym.
While motivation can be an issue, getting yourself into a routine to exercise at home can be a great alternative to joining a gym. There are also many excellent workout videos for free on Youtube that can help.
Walking
I’ve written about how walking is massively underrated before, and it can be as good as any other exercise.
Whether you are just starting to get fit and going for short walks every day or taking a strenuous route regularly, walking has many benefits.
Walking is good for your cardiovascular health, improves your mental well-being, and it is a great way to lose weight and boost your overall level of fitness.
Take up a sport
Sports are an effective method of exercising while also giving you a chance to learn something new and keeping your brain engaged.
You don’t need to start playing rigorous contact sports like football or rugby or keep fit. Other sports such as badminton or table tennis are great ways to keep active in a fun and competitive environment.
Local clubs are a good place to start as they often offer beginner sessions to help you learn about the sport and meet new people.
Cycling
If running isn’t your thing, cycling can also have positive benefits on your physical and mental health.
While running is cheaper and generally burns more calories, cycling is easier on your joints and allows you to cover more distance. As an alternative to going to the gym several times a week, hopping on your bike and taking yourself off on a nice route can be incredibly rewarding.
Even with the initial upfront cost of purchasing a bike if you don’t already have one, it can be a bigger motivator for many people to get fit than travelling to the gym and working out for an hour.
Make some small daily changes
Some small changes to your daily routine can actually count as exercise.
Things such as taking the stairs instead of using the lift, having a ‘walking meeting’ instead of sitting around a desk or even moving around when you’re on the phone can all have benefits.
While these small changes won’t have the same impact as walking long distances, doing home workouts, or going for a run, they will contribute towards better physical health.
