Personal Trainer vs. DIY workouts – Which is more effective?
November, 2024
There are many reasons why people prefer working out by themselves and doing their own thing rather than using a personal trainer. They might enjoy the solitude of simply getting on with a workout at the pace they prefer or it could come down to a cost issue.
This is all fine and I always believe that you should do whatever gets you results.
Looking at this more generally though, does using a personal trainer yield better results than a DIY workout? Let’s find out.
How good is your motivation?
I think this is the crucial question you need to ask yourself if you are weighing up whether or not to use a PT.
Just how good are you at self-motivating yourself, setting a routine, and sticking to it? I’ve come across many people who are great at this and they can consistently get themselves to the gym or go out for a run; however, if you think you might start to drop-off after a while, using a personal trainer is a great method to keep going.
Aside from setting up a clear exercise plan that is aligned with your goals, a personal trainer is invaluable for providing encouragement, reassurance, and using other soft skills to help you.
We’re results driven
Many people are able to achieve the fitness goals they want by working out on their own.
However, a personal trainer is there to help you get the results you want. It is what we are all about. Whether this is getting in shape and training for a new challenge or shifting some extra weight, we want to help you.
For me, this is another crucial benefit of using PT over a DIY workout. We’re there to assist you in your journey and, in most cases, you’ll see results quicker than if you train by yourself.
It’s also important to consider the impact of fitness plateau’s. These can be incredibly difficult to overcome by yourself and leads to many people simply giving up.
While a personal trainer won’t guarantee you will get over a fitness plateau, we do help enormously by mixing up your routine, looking at your nutritional intake and providing encouragement to keep going.
Personal Trainer vs. DIY workouts – Which is more effective?
I came across this interesting study that looked at the difference between 66 males who were split into three categories (self-training, training with a partner, and training with a PT) over a 12 week period.
It showed that the group that were trained by a personal trainer achieved better fat reduction, better nutritional intake, and suffered less injuries and discomfort when working out compared to the other participants.
Now, this is one study and I know that using a personal trainer isn’t going to be for everyone. However, I think it demonstrates that if you are on the fence about using a PT, there are many benefits that will help you achieve your fitness goals and set up an exercise routine that you stick with.
