Is the New Year the best time to start Personal Training?

As we head into a new year (and a new decade) you’ll no doubt be thinking about your New Year’s Resolutions.

Most people set off the new year with good intentions. Whether it is getting that gym membership you’ve talked about for ages, reading a book every month or cutting down on unhealthy food, we’ve probably set a resolution at some stage.

80% of New Year’s Resolutions fail by February and for many people this means trying to maintain a fitness schedule for the first few weeks and then giving up.

So, with the new year upon us is it the right time to start personal training?

New Year, new me?

We’ve probably all muttered this phrase at some stage. As we say goodbye to the old year and hello to the next we want to believe that we can better ourselves for the next 12 months.

The problem is that for many people they are going from no motivation to trying to do it all at once right away. Rather than gradually easing themselves into a healthier regime they go full throttle at the start of January and usually end up burning themselves out.

This is particularly true if they don’t see the results they want. While weight loss is normally one of the big New Year’s Resolutions, it can be hard to achieve quick weight loss without expert help from a personal trainer and a lot of dedication.

There is no ‘best time’ but…

Really there isn’t an ‘optimal time’ to start with a personal trainer but whether it is the start of January or the end of July, you need to have the commitment to achieve your goals.

That being said, a new year can usher in a new sense of motivation. If you are just going to the gym yourself or heading out of a jog the chances are your motivation is going to decrease over the weeks. That’s why so many people give up.

By starting the new year with a PT you will give yourself the best chance to keep up your fitness schedule well past the end of January.
