Help! I Need a Personal Trainer

If you’ve been dieting or working out but not seeing the results you were hoping for, you might start to ask yourself, ‘do I need a personal trainer to lose weight?’

Who should you choose?  What is personal training?  These are some of the questions that go through the minds of people looking for personal trainers.  It can feel quite daunting.

Finding out the answers will take away some of the unknown and get you started on the path to a fitter, healthier you.

What is Personal Training?

A personal trainer will assess your fitness levels and exercise history.  They will discuss your goals and develop a customised plan to help you achieve those goals as efficiently as possible.  Because people looking for personal trainers often have very different goals, a personal trainer will usually work with you on a one-to-one basis, or sometimes in small groups.

Not all personal trainers have the same level of qualifications or experience so it’s important to choose not only a personal trainer that you get along with, but one who is able to meet your needs.  For example, if you do want help from a personal trainer to lose weight, an obvious fit would be a personal trainer who can also give sound nutrition advice.

Why You Need a Personal Trainer

A personal trainer is a professional who is trained to know the specific effects that exercise will have on your body.  A good personal trainer wants to educate you so that you have the confidence to take responsibility for your fitness for the whole of your life.  So they will teach you the correct technique, form and appropriate level of intensity for carrying out each exercise so that it has maximum impact and is performed safely.

You may need a personal trainer to show you a new way to exercise safely during pregnancy or to aid rehabilitation.

Personal training is what turns boring old workouts into something fun.  Your personal trainer will ensure that you are constantly being challenged and will select activities that you enjoy.  Enjoying the workouts will lift your mood which will also increase your motivation to continue.

How Often Will I Need a Personal Trainer Session?

How often you will need personal training sessions will largely depend on you.  Your personality and levels of willpower may require that you meet with your personal trainer once or twice a week and have a programme set out for you to work to in between your sessions.  The time spent with your personal trainer will give you opportunity to review your progress and spur you on for the rest of the week.

Other people may prefer a few personal training sessions a week for a few weeks to set them up.  They then go off to train on their own and check back in with the personal trainer after a few weeks to analyse their progress and change up the training programme.

Of course if you’re on a tight time frame, if you need help from a personal trainer to lose weight for an occasion, or if you’re training for an event, an increased number of sessions may help you to reach your goal in time.
