Healthy Eating Habits for Sustainable Weight Loss

August, 2025

Have you ever tried to lose weight and found some initial progress only to see your gains slow down or stop completely? Don’t worry, it is incredibly common and I come across this with clients all the time.

While completely changing your diet overnight and cutting out less healthy foods and snacks might work for a short period of time, it really isn’t ideal for sustainable weight loss.

Why? Many people don’t stick to crash or fad diets for very long. They tend to go back to their old ways without making healthy eating a habit.

Let’s find out how you can eat better and sustain this to help you lose weight.

Knowledge is key

Knowing causes you to put on extra pounds is important. If you don’t have the right knowledge of why certain foods contribute to weight gain then you won’t cut these down.

This is where a personal trainer can really help. We are able to provide nutritional information and education which helps you learn what foods you should restrict.

I don’t believe in completely cutting everything “bad” for you out of your diet. But, certainly limiting unhealthy foods and drinks instead of having these all the time will help. Some people practice a Mediterranean diet which can help you lose weight while others focus on counting their calories – but arming yourself with this knowledge will help you follow a diet that is right for you.

Work around your lifestyle

Not everyone’s lifestyle is the same. We all have different commitments, jobs and personal lives.

There isn’t a one size fits all approach to creating healthy eating habits because what works for one person might not for someone else. If you find yourself snacking at certain times of the day because your energy is low, try and figure out what that is. When did you last eat a meal? Is stress causing you to eat more? Are you snacking late at night because you have dinner early?

Working this out can help you create a healthier lifestyle and making small tweaks to your day such as when you eat and what you eat, can make a big difference.

Think long term

A lot of people want to lose weight because they have a specific reason. This could be a beach holiday coming up, getting married or pursuing a challenge. This is all fine and it does give you an end goal to focus on, but what happens after your holiday is over or when your challenge is completed?

Sustainable long term weight loss means that you continue these healthy eating habits months and years down the line. It is looking at weight loss as a gradual thing that also contributes to better long term health.

This is why I don’t think an aggressive approach to losing weight really works for many people because it is focused on a very short term goal. Incorporating healthy foods, an overall balanced diet and regular exercise over a period of time makes weight loss more sustainable.

Take control of your weight loss journey

Looking beyond the next few weeks and months and instead healthy eating as a long term goal rather than a short term fix is a healthier way to lose and sustain weight loss.

While aggressive diets that cut everything out right away will probably work in the short term, chances you are won’t stick with this for very long, nor is it healthy.

As a personal trainer, I think the most effective strategy to lose weight is one where you see this journey as a lifestyle change and not something that you will discard once you realise your goal.
