Can kettlebells help with weight loss?

October, 2021

There are many different exercises and workouts that can help you to lose weight.

Shedding those extra pounds and getting back into shape is often one of the most difficult goals to achieve. Sometimes it can feel like you are doing everything correct but making little progress.

However, with the correct approach and a tailored exercise regime alongside expert nutritional information, losing weight is a very realistic goal.

In this blog, we are going to explore how effective kettlebells can be for weight loss.

What are kettlebells?

Kettlebells are made from cast-iron or steel and you will have probably come across them if you have ever visited a gym. They are shaped like a ball with a handle on top.

Kettlebells also come in various weights and you can perform a wide range of different exercises that target specific areas of your body. This includes exercises such as squats, lunges, shoulder presses, and weight lifting.

There are many different exercises that you can perform with kettlebells. In fact, you don’t even need to visit a gym as they are an affordable piece of exercise equipment that you can use at home.

How do kettlebells help you to lose weight?

So, how do kettlebells help you to shed those extra pounds?

Burning calories

The most significant benefit of using kettlebells for exercise is that you can burn a lot of calories and it helps to create a calorie deficit.

Kettlebell exercises tend to be quite intense and many workouts can burn up to 20 calories per minute. This is a lot more than some other types of training such as resistance training (up to 8 calories per minute) and swimming (around 9 calories per minute).

Another major benefit of kettlebell workouts is that it boosts your EPOC (Post Exercise Oxygen Consumption). This is where your body continues to burn calories after you have finished exercising and goes a long way to achieving your weight loss goals.

Exercising a broad muscle range

Kettlebells also target a large range of muscles and you will work more muscle groups with a kettlebell exercise than with many other workouts.

A fairly intense kettlebell session can target your back, chest, core muscles, thighs, and arms. This has an increased benefit to your body overall as many traditional weight lifting or exercise plans won’t target as many muscle groups at once.

Are kettlebells more effective than running?

Both kettlebell workouts and running can have a positive impact on your health and they can both contribute towards weight loss.

As a general rule, kettlebells do burn more calories per minute than going for a run – running burns around 13 calories per minute compared to around 20 for kettlebells.  For many people, kettlebell workouts can be more suitable, for example if you are suffering from an injury which prevents you from running any significant distance.

So, in terms of weight loss, kettlebells are a fantastic option. They are not only effective but pretty much anyone can start kettlebell exercises and begin their weight loss journey.
