I Want A Personal Trainer

Can You Lose Weight Just Training Outdoors in Sutton Coldfield?

September, 2026

A lot of people come to me with questions about personal training for weight loss and ask if it’s possible to reach their fat loss goals by training outdoor alone. The simple answer to this question is yes; it absolutely is. It doesn’t really matter where you train – what matters is how you train and that you’re training consistently while maintaining good nutrition.

Types Of Training You Can Do Outdoors

You don’t actually need a gym membership to reach your goals. Outdoor training offers all of the same benefits, as it allows you to take part in all sorts of activities, such as:

  • Going on long walks or hikes (great for steady-state cardio)
  • Sprint training (perfect for HIIT)
  • Any type of bodyweight training (press-ups, pull-ups at a local park, etc)
  • Circuit training

There’s also nothing stopping you from having dedicated personal training sessions outdoors. This can incorporate weights or other equipment to create resistance training to help you build muscle. As you can see, you’re more than capable of doing all kinds of exercises that help you burn fat or build muscle outside.

Pros & Cons Of Outdoor Training

The only downsides of outdoor training are that you will depend on the weather, and you also won’t have access to as much equipment. For example, you can’t use cable machines outside, nor will you find specific cardio equipment – like cross-trainers or ski machines.

While you can’t argue against the weather point, you can argue against the second one, as you can swap a lot of cardio gym equipment for the real thing anyway – like cycling on an actual bike, running instead of using a treadmill, and so on. Plus, many people feel more motivated when training outdoors because it’s less of an intimidating environment and you can find bootcamps or group personal training sessions with other people. There can definitely be more of a community feel to outdoor training, which is a big motivator and can encourage you to work out more consistently than you would with a gym membership.

Exercise Is Still Only Part Of The Equation

The point of this post isn’t to say that gyms are bad and outdoor training is good. Everyone has a preference. The point is that you can lose weight by training outdoors alone, but that’s still only part of the weight loss equation.

You’ll only lose body fat if you burn more calories than you consume. A good nutrition plan is the key to this, and no amount of outdoor or indoor training will help you lose fat if you’re not eating properly. You also need to ensure you’re not eating too little and then losing muscle alongside fat, so it can feel like a difficult balancing act. Of course, if you need help settling on a nutrition and exercise plan, then feel free to get in touch with me, as I offer personal training for weight loss in Sutton Coldfield.

All in all, outdoor personal training and exercise is an accessible and enjoyable option for anyone who maybe doesn’t want to join a gym. You could also find ways to work out at home to save money on gym memberships – and to ensure you can remain consistent during the rainy days!
