Nutrition Tips for Weight Loss: Insights from a Personal Trainer
July, 2025
A lot of my clients come to me with the goal of losing weight. It’s probably the most common reason people use a PT because without that extra motivation, a tailored fitness plan as well as expert knowledge, trying to achieve weight loss goals on your own can be a bit like throwing darts in the dark.
Even if you put a load of hours into the gym doing cardio or lifting weights, if you don’t have a solid nutrition plan this is all going to be a bit fruitless.
So if you’re just starting your weight loss journey, I’m going to walk you through a few fundamental nutrition strategies that I use with my clients.
Don’t be scared of calories
We all know that your calorie intake plays a huge role in reaching your weight loss goals.
I come across people who absolutely obsess over calories and they’re frightened to eat certain foods that might take them over their calorie limit. Fundamentally there is nothing really wrong with keeping on top of your calorie intake. A calorie deficit is key to losing weight.
However, life’s a bit short to be depriving yourself of everything that’s not 100% good for you. I think a balanced diet that cuts your calorie intake down while exercising regularly works well for weight loss. Set a daily calorie goal and plan your meals in advance but don’t fret if you go a few calories over some days.
Protein is your friend
When it comes to building muscle, protein is vital and getting your daily protein intake is important for strength training. But what about losing weight?
One advantage of eating foods that are protein rich is that you tend to feel fuller for longer. This helps you to resist the urge to start snacking between meals which is often a direct cause of putting on extra pounds.
Lots of foods like chicken, fish, turkey, cheese and eggs are high in protein and they can make you feel full while also being easily incorporated into a calorie deficit diet.
Change your diet gradually
This tip might not work for everyone but I find many clients who go too fast too soon.
If you go from having a fairly unhealthy diet with lots of snacking and fatty food straight into a strict low calorie plan, chances are you won’t stick with it for very long. I also think gradual changes to nutrition and fitness habits work best because they help you build up good habits over time.
Rather than deciding to cut all processed foods and those high in sugar all at once, make smaller changes to your diet because it will feel less overwhelming.
How a personal trainer can help
PT’s aren’t just there to provide encouragement and get you to do that extra set on the weights that you probably wouldn’t do if you were by yourself.
We can provide expert nutritional information too. Exercising is all well and good but with a poor diet you won’t see the kind of success you expect.
If you are serious about losing weight and want to commit to a combined regular fitness and healthy diet approach, get in touch to find out how I can help.
