The Role of Nutrition in Achieving Your Fitness Goals
December, 2023
Aside from working out and keeping active on a regular basis, eating the right foods is paramount to achieving your fitness goals.
Regardless of if you are starting training for a challenge, just want to get back into shape, or you are planning on building muscle, nutrition is a vital part of this journey.
Most personal trainers, including myself, are able to provide nutritional advice and this will directly complement your exercise plan.
Let’s explore why nutrition is important and how you can use it to your advantage and get closer to achieving your goals.
Why nutrition matters
Nutrition is a key part of staying fit and healthy.
Even if you go to the gym 3 times a week or run 5k every few days, if you aren’t eating a healthy and balanced diet, you won’t see the gains you want.
Tailoring your diet to what you want to achieve is important too. While you need a balanced meal plan, you might want to focus more on upping your protein intake to build muscle or cut down on calories and sugar if you plan to lose weight.
Post and pre-workout nutrition
What you eat before and after your workout plays a big role in helping you get into shape.
Combining both protein and carbohydrates before a workout will help give you the energy to exercise for longer.I think it is generally best to avoid food that has a high fat content prior to hitting the gym or going for a run.
After you exercise, you should look at getting protein into your system. This should be done within an hour or two after you finish exercising. Carbs also help with your recovery from exercise as they will boost your glycogen levels.
Staying Committed to Your Nutrition Plan
I often see people starting off all guns blazing with their new nutritional intake but they start to fall away after a few weeks or a couple of months.
Radically changing your diet in a short space of time isn’t easy. If you do need to make significant alterations to what and how much you eat, I would recommend introducing this gradually. Planning your meals for the next few days or the week will help you stay on track too.
Don’t feel discouraged or give up if you have a setback. I’m an advocate of things in moderation, so don’t think that you need to completely cut out everything that is vaguely unhealthy for you. Balancing your diet and putting an emphasis on certain foods to help you achieve your goals is key.
The Role of Nutrition in Achieving Your Fitness Goals
Eating the right foods is just as important as working out and exercising.
Without a tailored nutrition plan, you won’t see the results you want even with a pretty intense exercise regime. While eating healthier is often associated with losing weight, it applies to any kind of fitness goals, including building muscle
