Why you should start meal planning
November, 2022
One of the main issues I have found with my clients and helping them on a journey to a healthier lifestyle is time.
Fitting in exercise or a PT session with a busy lifestyle isn’t always straightforward, and the same goes for eating properly too.
This is where meal planning comes in.
Meal planning is creating a menu for your meals that week, and it has significant benefits. In this month’s blog, I’m going to show you why you start meal planning and how it can help you embark on a healthier and fitter lifestyle.
Reasons to start meal planning
#1 Save money
Doing a weekly shop and planning what you need for that week in advance has substantial financial benefits.
In a time when the cost of living is rising sharply, many of us are putting an emphasis on cutting down our expenditure. By planning your meals for the week ahead, you can buy the items you need for each meal and reduce your shopping bill.
#2 Cuts down on unhealthy meals
When it comes to achieving your goals, eating properly is as important as exercising.
Planning your meals in advance by purchasing the ingredients you need on a weekly basis (and perhaps even meal prepping where you make meals two or three days in advance too), will help you cut down on eating unhealthy food.
While there is nothing wrong with a treat now and again, meal planning will help to avoid grabbing a takeaway or cooking an unhealthy dinner when you can’t be bothered to head to the shop after work.
#3 Less food waste
We waste a lot of food in the UK and much of this is down to poor planning for dinners and other meals.
So, by meal planning you can reduce food waste which not only helps you save money by not buying food and throwing it out, but it is better for the environment. Meal planning is also a good method of using items that have been sitting in your cupboards for a while.
#4 Reduces stress
It might not sound overly stressful, but thinking about what to make for dinner every night and trying to figure out if you have the right ingredients can be a headache.
Stress isn’t good for us, no matter how big or small the issues causing stress are. Exercise is a fantastic way to alleviate stress; however, I think that meal planning is also a good stress reliever. Not only does it make you more organized for the days or weeks ahead, but it’ll cut down on adding more stress to your daily life.
How a personal trainer can help
